Hi, I’m April. I’ll help you become the CEO of your career.

I’m a Tony-winning producer, writer and actor working across film, television and theater. I was on the Tony-winning producing teams for August Wilson’s Jitney (2017) and Porgy & Bess (2012), produced the Sundance features Blue Caprice, Mother of George and Gun Hill Road, and wrote, produced and starred in my Miami Trilogy plays at New York Theatre Workshop.

I teach the business strategy behind a sustainable acting career, and the storytelling that lets you make your own work. You know, the stuff no one teaches you in acting school.

We don’t want to just take your money. We want to give you the tools to change your life.

What clients say

April said, “Well, why don’t you write something for yourself?” … April is the person who was able to make me realize what I have to bring to the table and how I can put that forward. So I am driving the direction of my career and not getting buffeted about by whatever trend comes up. Because I’m not here for a trend, I’m here for the long haul.

In their own words, from the people April has coached.

I coached with April for months, she kicked my butt in all the right ways. She challenged me to dig a lot deeper than I even realized that I even had. The training was really specific, compassionate, intelligent, informative. She helped me pull out some of my best work. As a result, I auditioned for 12 different grad programs, got into 11 of them. Now, I’m at Juilliard, part of the first group of the masters division. I have no doubt that I would not be here if not for April.

April demystifies everything. She has this innate spidey-sense when you’re overwhelmed & she steps right in and offers this level of support that is right on the money. She knows what you need right when you need it the most.

Just signed with new agents & managers this week. Couldn’t have done it without April’s sage advice & incredible coaching. You should have seen my cover letter to these people. Apparently it blew them away & I had an actual CHOICE among agents who wanted to represent me. All down to April.

April’s strong, quiet, supportive presence was more vital to me exploring MY story than I would have thought. The safe environment she creates gave me freedom to be fully honest with myself in ways that surprised myself. In any interviews I give nationally about my solo play “Empanada For A Dream” (nominated for a Jeff Award for Best Solo Show), I make sure to mention April Yvette Thompson’s name because the most complete stories in my award winning play were from her workshops. She has inspired me to help others tell their stories. She taught me that the same commitment I give to others, I should give to myself. I haven’t looked back.

April Yvette Thompson is one of the most influential teaching artists I have ever worked with. She is a first rate teacher and coach who has had an immense impact on my life. Whether April is functioning as an acting coach, business teacher or writing instructor, which I have been lucky enough to have been her student in all three capacities, her teaching is incredibly specific. I would not be at the Juilliard School right now if I hadn’t worked with her.

April Yvette Thompson gives insightful and hard-hitting advice that not only motivates, but gives you the much needed kick-in-the-pants that even an experienced actor such as myself needs.
